Taxis in Dubai

Taxis in Dubai

6 min read Updated June 2026

Dubai taxis are everywhere, air-conditioned, and reasonably priced but knowing which option to choose can save you both time and money.

Not in a rush? For longer trips across the city, the Dubai Metro is often the cheaper, faster option.

At the Airport

When you land at Dubai International (DXB), you'll find an official taxi rank right outside arrivals. These are RTA-regulated cream-colored taxis with a AED 25 flag-down fee from the airport (higher than city pickups). The queue moves fast and drivers know where they're going.

Pro Tip

If you're traveling to a hotel in a known area like Downtown or Marina, book a Careem/Uber from inside the terminal. You'll often get a fixed fare that beats the meter, especially during traffic hours.

Regular Taxis vs. Ride Apps

Option Base Fare Best For
RTA Taxi (street hail) AED 12 Quick pickups, no phone needed
Uber Varies (fixed upfront) Upfront pricing, familiar interface
Careem Varies (fixed upfront) Local app, loyalty points, cash option
Hala (RTA + Careem) AED 12 Official RTA taxi via app

Good to Know

Hala is the RTA's official taxi-hailing app (powered by Careem). You get a regular metered taxi but with the convenience of app booking and tracking.

Payment Options

All Dubai taxis accept cash (AED), and most now have card machines. Uber and Careem let you pay by card, Apple Pay, or cash. Just set your preference in the app before booking.

✓ Do

  • Keep small bills for cash payments
  • Check the meter is running when you get in
  • Use apps during peak hours for fixed pricing
  • Screenshot your route if using a new driver

✗ Don't

  • Accept "flat rate" offers from unofficial drivers
  • Forget to check surge pricing on apps
  • Leave belongings behind — check seats before exiting
  • Haggle with metered taxi drivers

Typical Fares

Airport to Downtown Dubai

AED 80 - 120

Metered, varies with traffic. Apps may offer fixed rate.

Marina to Dubai Mall

AED 50 - 70

20-40 min depending on time of day

⚠️

Important

During peak hours (7-9am, 5-8pm) and Friday brunch times, expect longer waits and higher surge pricing on apps. Metered taxis don't surge but may be harder to find.

Women-Only Taxis

Dubai has pink-roofed taxis driven by women, specifically for female passengers and families. You can request these through the Hala app or find them at mall taxi ranks. Metered rates apply.

💡

Pro Tip

Download both Uber and Careem before your trip. Compare prices for each ride before you book.
